Pioneer 10 — Humanity's First Message to the Stars
In 1972, NASA launched Pioneer 10 into deep space carrying a gold-anodised aluminium plaque — a message from humanity to the cosmos. Designed by Carl Sagan and Frank Drake, with artwork by Linda Salzman Sagan, it was the first physical message ever sent beyond our solar system.
The plaque depicts a man and a woman — naked, unadorned, and equal — standing before a diagram of our solar system and the position of Earth. It shows the hydrogen atom, pulsar map coordinates, and the trajectory of the spacecraft itself.
